Zambian Nurse Recovers from Aggressive Blood Cancer After Treatment in Hyderabad

A 27-year-old nurse from Zambian Nurse has successfully recovered from an aggressive form of bloodcancer after undergoing advanced medical treatment and a stem cell transplant at a Hyderabad hospital.She faced serious complications, frequent infections, and multiple medical emergencies during treatment, making her recovery a remarkable medical success.

Zambian Nurse Diagnosis and Decision for Advanced Treatment

The patient, Mumba Margaret, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) in September 2023. AML is a rapidly progressing cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow and often requires urgent and specialised care. Doctors advised her to undergo a stem cell transplant to improve survival chances.

Due to limited treatment options in her home country, she decided to seek specialised cancer care in India and travelled to Hyderabad for further treatment.

Zambian Nurse Complications Before Transplant

After admission to KIMS Hospital, doctors began preparing her for the transplant procedure. However, before the transplant could be performed, she was diagnosed with tuberculosis. This unexpected condition delayed the transplant and required immediate medical management.

During the tuberculosis treatment, her leukaemia relapsed, forcing doctors to initiate another intensive round of chemotherapy. The aggressive treatment weakened her immune system, leaving her vulnerable to infections.

Zambian Nurse Prolonged Hospitalisation and Infections

Over the next few weeks, Ms. Margaret developed multiple infections and had to remain hospitalised for nearly 40 days. The medical team closely tracked her health and delivered intensive supportive treatment to bring her condition under control and prepare her for the transplant procedure.

Despite the complications, the medical team continued working towards the goal of performing the life-saving procedure.

Stem Cell Transplant and Critical Phase

On June 19, doctors successfully performed a stem cell transplant. While the procedure itself went as planned, the post-transplant period became extremely critical.

According to Dr. Narendra Kumar Thota, Head of Hemato-Oncology and Stem Cell and Bone Marrow Transplant, the patient developed a rare condition known as severe dyselectrolytemia. This led to dangerous electrolyte imbalances, increasing the risk of seizures, kidney failure, and heart rhythm disturbances.

Multiple Cardiac Arrests and Emergency Care

During this phase, her condition worsened rapidly. She experienced more than seven cardiac arrests, each requiring immediate emergency resuscitation. Teams from critical care, cardiology, and stem cell transplantation worked together continuously to revive and stabilise her.

She was placed under intensive care, where doctors closely monitored her heart function, electrolyte levels, and infection status.

Recovery and Discharge

Gradually, her condition began to improve. The electrolyte levels stabilised, infections were controlled, and her body started responding positively to the transplanted stem cells. Follow-up tests confirmed that the transplant was successful and the leukaemia was under control.

After weeks of intensive care and recovery, Ms. Margaret was discharged in stable condition.

Significance of the Case

Doctors described her recovery as an example of advanced cancer care and coordinated medical teamwork. The case highlights Hyderabad’s growing reputation as a destination for complex cancer treatments and stem cell transplantation for international patients.
